Course 2a4 – Module observation and survey methodologies

Targets: a practical/theoretical module that allows participants to learn the theoretical notions and practical skills to correctly carry out snow and weather observations and surveys at manual snow weather stations and then fill in the various forms according to AINEVA standards.
Content: detailed illustration of the observation and survey methods with an exhaustive study of criteria for observation and proper data measurement and coding with an introduction to snowcover stability tests.
Duration: 2.5 days for a total of 20 hours, with compulsory attendance (6.5 hours of theory in classroom and 13.5 hours of practice).
Prerequisites:

  • high school diploma
  • autonomy in ski-touring or winter hike with snowshoes on mountain terrain of average difficulty (level S3.1 of the French Toponeige* rating system)
  • having consolidated and certified skills in alpine meteorology and snow science (Module 2a1, 2a2 AINEVA) and self-rescue in avalanche (Modulo 1a or 2a3 AINEVA or courses with equivalent exam).

    Required equipment: digital 3-antenna avalanche transceiver, shovel with telescopic handle and metal blade, self-rescue probe; appropriate outfit and footwear for snow-covered terrain.
