Module 2a2 – Advanced module snow science and alpine meteorology
Targets: exhaustively study the basic theoretical notions that are necessary to evaluate and explain the processes of formation of seasonal snow on the ground and the avalanche phenomena in the mountain terrain, specifically considering all connected dangers and risks.
Content:
- detailed illustration of the factors and processes that control atmospheric phenomena in the winter season in the mountain environment and their interaction with orography
- in-depth study of the classification of precipitation particles (primary and secondary forms) also in relation with the factors and processes that control their formation in the atmosphere and on the snowcover surface
- in-depth study of the classification for seasonal snow on the ground (classes and sub-classes) also in relation with the factors and processes that control its seasonal spatial-temporal evolution (metamorphism and heat transfer with atmosphere, effects of wind, sun and rain)
- illustration of the factors causing avalanche release and criteria for identifying avalanche terrains
- illustration of the main methods and strategies for risk reduction and accident prevention. Illustration of the methods for snowprofile evaluation.
Duration: 1 day for a total of 8 hours in classroom, with compulsory attendance.
Prerequisites: secondary school diploma.
