Module 2a1 – Basic module snow science and alpine meteorology
Targets: learn the basic theoretical notions that are necessary to evaluate and explain the processes of formation and evolution of seasonal snow on the ground and the avalanche phenomena in the mountain terrain, specifically considering all connected dangers and risks.
Content:
- general illustration of the factors and processes that control the atmospheric events in the winter season in the mountain environment and their interaction with orography
- in-depth study of the classification of precipitation particles (primary and secondary forms) also in relation with the factors and processes that control their formation in the atmosphere and on the snowcover surface
- general introduction to classification for seasonal snow on the ground (classes) also in relation with the factors and processes that control its seasonal spatial-temporal evolution (metamorphism and heat transfer with the atmosphere, effects of wind, sun and rain)
- illustration of classification criteria for avalanches
- general illustration of snow mechanics and the physical-mechanical processes at the base of the different types of snowcover motion (avalanche and snow-creep)
- illustration of the general criteria for identifying avalanche terrains
- general analysis of the structure of the avalanche bulletin and general illustration of the avalanche danger evaluation and forecasting activities
- illustration of the main methods and strategies for reducing risk, phenomenology of avalanche accidents and connected heuristic traps (human factor).
